“Slow Thoughts for the Practice Room”

It is undeniable that we live in a world where brevity and quick mastery are praised as virtues. Looking at the “quick, easy, and effective” ways to play jazz that flood the internet, one might naturally wonder:

“Is the conventional way of learning jazz still necessary?”

Yet, I still hold firm belief in the path laid out by our predecessors and mentors—the true process of growing as a jazz musician. We listen deeply, feel the music, emulate it, and grasp its inner meaning. We dive further into study or shedding when needed. Then, through playing and communicating with peers, we gradually shape our own musical identity.

This publication is neither a rigorous academic journal nor a gossip magazine made for quick entertainment. Nor is it a guidebook filled with fast hacks. Instead, sitting right between scholarly inquiry and an engaging read, this journal is a curated collection of thoughts on jazz music and practice—things we might easily overlook when grown too accustomed to trends or routine.

I do not speak from a place of great wisdom, but as a fellow jazz musician genuinely devoted to the music. I simply wanted to share these reflections with everyone who, even at this very moment, continues to dream of better musicianship inside the practice room.

Is jazz dead? Well—let’s keep it alive and abundant.
